It seems like as soon as we crossed the Colorado River into Arizona we started to notice the Cacti. Like lone misshapen stick figures silently standing on the hills.

They're really figural and they feel important, and not just because the oldest ones (200 yr olds) tower over you at 25 feet or so.
They're evolutionarily a very late developing plant species and quite complicated - their whole construction is built to survive a very dry and hot environment while fending off moisture seeking animals. And wikipedia just told me its illegal to "plug" them (shoot 'em) or destroy them in any way in Arizona. See what I mean? Figural!
